Calmer Choice/Mindfulness Lesson 1: Five-Finger Breathing

During our Calmer Choice lessons in the library, we have learned one way you can
pay attention to your breath when you notice your amygdala/guard dog/alarm going off is by practicing 5-finger breathing.

Here's how you can teach 5-finger breathing to your families:

As the pointer finger of one hand runs along the outside of the other hand’s fingers,
starting with the base of the
thumb...the in breath (up the thumb...the pause in between
rounding over the top of the thumb)...the out breath (down
the inside of the thumb)...and the pause in between
(rounding at the bottom of thumb)...the in breath (up the pointer finger...keep going around all fingers and then trace
around the bottom of the hand back to the base of the
thumb.
