School Assemblies
-
Students in each grade learn/review a song (patriotic or thematic) to sing for our school assemblies.
Our focus for 2023-24 is America, the Beautiful, written by Katherine Lee Bates, the most honored native-born resident of Falmouth, Massachusetts, who lived on Cape Cod from 1859 to 1871. Her passion for writing began as a child in Falmouth and continued while she was a student at Wellesley High School. She joined the faculty at Wellesley College in 1886, where she taught English literature for 39 years. It was in 1893 on a summer trip to Colorado Springs that she was inspired to write the lyrics to America, the Beautiful while standing atop of Pike's Peak and viewing the world below. Later it was set to a well-known hymn of the time by Samuel Ward. She has rested in Oak Grove Cemetery in Falmouth since 1929.
This song has a special place within the history of Cape Cod. Try singing on your own with this accompaniment. Then listen to Elvis sing it... Elvis sings "America, the Beautiful"
