SUPERFOODS - What Are They?

  • SUPERFOODS

Superfoods are natural, minimally processed foods that are exceptionally high in nutrients (nutritionally dense), phytochemicals and antioxidants, that offer great health benefits from comparatively small amounts of food.  In other words, the nutrient to calorie ratio of these foods is very high; eating them gives you a very high level of micronutrients with very few calories (blueberries are a good example).

Although many of the very powerful superfoods are from South American rain forests and fields and are expensive and hard to find, there are many superfoods that are easily available and budget-friendly.  Think garlic, onions, leeks, scallions, many nuts and most seeds, cranberries, blueberries, sour cherries, yogurt & kefir, whole grains and so much more!
