April brings “showers” of giving to others at O.E.S.! On March 30th students in grades 3-5 completed a two-week “Read to Feed” challenge from Heifer International. With the generous sponsorship of many local businesses including the Barley Neck Inn, If the Shoe Fits, Snow’s Department Store, The Chocolate Sparrow, Namskaket Farm and the Brewster Book Store students were able to turn reading “minutes” into valuable resources for communities in need around the world! Students committed to extra reading each school night for two weeks—the response was truly inspirational –as children clocked over 28,000 minutes of additional reading beyond their nightly requirement. This month we will be able to give cows, goats, pigs and chicks to communities in desperate need of our help! Heifer International has pledged to match our donation this month-so we are giving a bonanza of resources away! The dedication of classroom teachers and the at-home support of reading made this event a huge success. We not only improved upon reading skills- but also helped others less fortunate than us along the way. Again, many thanks to all who worked to make this event possible. Martha Jenkins
